FAQ - Reed sensors and reed relays
How does a reed sensor work?
A reed sensor as a switching element contains a reed switch. This consists of a glass bulb with two ferromagnetic contact tongues. When a magnet approaches, the contacts close the circuit. This creates an electrical signal - contactless and wear-free.
What is the difference between reed sensors and inductive sensors?
Reed sensors switch via a magnetic field and also work with non-metallic objects, while inductive sensors react to metal and work via an electromagnetic field.
Reed sensors are ideal for many contactless applications, inductive sensors for robust metal object detection in automation. Are individual cable connections possible?
Yes, we offer reed sensors with an open cable, plug (e.g. M8, M12) or pre-assembled cable - tailored to your control system or machine.
What is the service life of a reed sensor?
Depending on the load and contact material, several million switching cycles can be achieved. With low currents (e.g. signal line) even significantly more. The hermetic encapsulation of the switching tongues ensures a high level of reliability.
Can reed sensors also be used at extreme temperatures?
Yes, we supply versions for applications from -40 °C to +150 °C. The decisive factors are the glass quality, the contact design and the sealing of the sensor housing.
What switching function do reed sensors have?
The reed sensors are available as normally open, normally closed and changeover contacts. The switching contacts have different voltage ranges and maximum current carrying capacity.
What switching distance do reed sensors have?
The switching distance depends on the sensitivity of the reed switch in the sensor and the magnet used. It can range from 1 millimeter to approx. 25 mm.
